The municipality of Partido de la Sierra en Tobalina (87 inhabitants in 2010; 4,432 ha; municipal website) is located in the northeast of Burgos Province, 70 km of Burgos. The municipality is made of the villages of Valderrama (34 inh.; capital), Cubilla (28 inh.) and Ranera (23 inh.).
Valderrama was resettled in the upper Middle Ages as Valle de Rama. in
the middle of the 12th century, Fernán González' last will lists the village as independent of Tobalina. During the resettlement of the town of Frías, in the 13th century, all the villages of Tobalina, including those of Partido, were incorporated into the municipality of Frías. In 1373, Valderrama and its villages, as well as Tobalina, were granted to the Velasco, one of the most powerful lineages in Castile.
Frías remained the capital of the Tobalina Valley until 1728, when
Quintana Martín Galíndez became the capital of a separate
municipality. In 1834, the Tobalina Valley was divided into the two
municipalities of Valle de Tobalina and Partido de la Sierra en Tobalina. The village of Zangández was subsequently transferred from Partido de la Sierra en Tobalina to the municipality of Oña.
