It is a fairly typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a blue and yellow quartered field (town rank).

The arms are Or an olive branch Vert fruited Sable between two heraldic fountains and in chief a cross Vert fleury (Avis Order Cross). Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "AREZ"
Meaning:
The fountains stand for the local Fadagosa springs and spa. (The English blazon above is a direct translation from the official text, although the arms in use have thebranch and the cross simply placed in pale, forming a cross with the two fountains.)

Arez Commune was one of the 10 communes (since 2013 remained 7) of Nisa Municipality (q.v.); it had 362 inhabitants in 2001 and covers 55,72 km². In 2013 it merged with Amieira do Tejo Commune.
