It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain purple field (village rank).

The arms are Argent a book Gules charged with three balls Or set per chevron and crowned with a mitre Purpure garnished and lined Or, in base two olive branches Vert fruited Sable with stems crossed per saltire. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "SANTARÉM - S. NICOLAU".
Meaning:
"São Nicolau" is "St. Nicolas" and refers to the conterminous catholic parish patron and name. The arms are canting, including saint's attributes: mitre, book and three golden balls.

São Nicolau Commune was one of the pre-2013 communes of Santarém Municipality (q.v.); it had 9036 inhabitants in 2001 and covered 14,84 km².
